On Sunday, April 23 the new weight room was dedicated. Central Community Unit District 3 Superintendent Marty Cook reflects on this project as follows:
“On May 8th of last year a large group of students and community members gathered at this site for a groundbreaking ceremony for a proposed weight room and athletic field restroom facility. After the tragic loss of Cory Heubner, his parents wanted to make something positive come from their loss. They discussed the possibility with members of our school board about helping to fund a weight room project. Funding from the Cory Heubner Memorial and the Heuby Bowl provided the necessary startup funding to get this project off the ground.
As word of this project began to spread, different groups and organizations within this community stepped forward to contribute funds to assist with this project. It soon became apparent that we had a large number of contractors and skilled laborers that wanted to volunteer their time and talents to build something that would benefit the students of our school district. It seemed that every time we had a planning meeting, we learned that more people had volunteered their services and skills to this project. By March of last year we knew that we had the services volunteered from builders, plumbers, electricians, concrete contractors, architects, and a local lumberyard.
We received donated funding from local Lions Clubs, our Booster Club, the Football Task Force, churches, student groups, and other groups and individuals in this community. We received grant funding from Dot Foods and Adams Electric. All in all this has truly been a real community project that will benefit our students for years to come.
I would also like to thank the Panther Pride Organization for serving as the custodians of all the donated funds given for this project.
There are a few people I would like to personally thank for playing major roles in seeing this project through. I think over the past year, I’ve talked to Rusty Mixer more than I have my wife. Rusty has been our go to guy on this project and helped keep things rolling over the past year. Mike Tournear played the lead role in getting the insulated foam block construction done on both the weight room and the outdoor restrooms.
Guys like Rob Davis, David Hanke, Doug and Darren Weese, Dale and Willy Kill, Bob Tangerose, Shawn Conley, Matt Long, and Jerry Nall were people that were always helping in one capacity or another. Guys, I can’t thank you enough for your help.
And finally, I’d like to address the kids that are here and the kids that will use this facility. This facility is for you. It was built by our community and volunteers so that you will have a place where you can work out and improve your individual abilities. It was built by individuals who gave something back to their community. As you use this weight room I hope that on occasion that you will reflect on that fact this building was built by a lot of volunteers who understand that giving to your community is something that benefits us all. Learn the value of giving and you will learn to be a better person.
